|Charles Martin (cello)
Charles was born in Ramsgate and didn't take up the cello until he started at the local grammar school. He realized he had a natural flair for the instrument after turning up for his cello lessons without having done any practice, sight-reading through his pieces and being told he had made good progress.
He studied piano and cello at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where practice took on a whole new meaning. After college he freelanced with various orchestras for six months before joining the BBC Symphony Orchestra where he remained for 34 years.
Having recently taken early retirement, Charles is back living in Ramsgate where he teaches cello and piano from home. He will continue performing locally and hopes to find time composing music for cello ensembles.
