Alexandra Fletcher
Cello
Alexandra was born in May 1985 in West London. She began playing the cello at the age of eight with Theo Ulrich and performed frequently in concerts and festivals, winning numerous prizes and receiving an award from the Associated Board for the highest examination result in the country. At the age of ten, Alexandra moved with her family to Massachusetts, USA where she attended the New England Conservatory of Music, studying weekly with Laura Blustein and being coached in chamber music by Colin Carr. She now lives in Canterbury and is preparing A Levels in French, English and Music at St Edmund's School where she also has lessons in jazz piano. She is studying the cello with Philip Sheppard at the Royal Academy of Music and attends the Academy's Junior Department Saturday programme. Apart from solo performance, Alexandra's musical experience has included playing with the Povey String Quartet at various conferences and at the Teacher's Awards Ceremony at Alexandra Palace. She has also performed with other chamber groups at the Wigmore Hall, St John's Smith Square and at the Barbican. She is a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, working under Mark Elder, Jiri Belohlavek and Sir Colin Davis, with additional coaching from Alexandra Baillie and David Strange. Alexandra won the 'Marlowe Young Musician of the Year' in November 2001, and more recently the 'Kingston Upon Thames Young Musician of the Year' in January 2002, having been awarded the Violincello Prize, The Instrumental Prize and The 'Premier Award' at Kingston's Festival of the Performing Arts. She played at the launch of Canterbury's contemporary music festival. 'Sounds New' in February. After leaving school, Alexandra hopes to study the cello at the Royal Academy of Music and pursue a career in music.
